GSC's Food Drive Competition nets $1,000+ for Food Gatherers

MSE students who volunteered at Food Gatherers on Nov. 28 include: Ron Kienan, Jon Schwartz, Kyle Bushick, Logan Williams, Max Powers, Geordie Lindemann, Kayla Byrd, Jacob Pietryga, and Aaron Gladstein.

For the month of November MSE was engaged in a friendly "food fight" that ultimately raised $950, 192 food items, and 89 hygiene/personal items for Ann Arbor's Food Gatherers.

Sponsored by the Graduate Student Council (GSC), the donation drive pitted undergraduates, graduate students and faculty/staff against each other to see who could donate the most for the local food bank. Faculty/staff ultimately won the contest and the "Big Spoon" award, which Todd Richardson accepted on behalf of the faculty/staff team at the GSC Holiday Party December 4.

The monthlong drive culminated in a volunteer session at Food Gatherers on Nov. 28 which was attended by nine MSE students.

"Our food drive competition was created to increase comradery within the department and as a reminder that we can all give back to the community and help those in need," said GSC Social Committee co-chair Aaron Gladstein, who organized the drive. "We chose to work with Food Gatherers due to their deep and widespread connections within Washtenaw County, and we hope to have more events volunteering with them in the future."
