Advances in Materials Science through Electrochemistry: Towards Low Cost Inorganic Semiconductors and Photoelectrochemical Systems

This talk will highlight recent innovations in the fields of semiconductor crystal growth and photoelectrochemistry from the Maldonado research group at the University of Michigan. First, I will describe the development of a new approach for liquid phase epitaxy based on electrodepositions performed with liquid metal electrodes. The driving force for this work is to demonstrate an intrinsically low cost, ‘low tech’ method to make high quality nano- and bulk crystalline semiconductor materials suitable for energy and optoelectronic applications. Second, recent progress in the preparation nanostructured p-type photocathodes suitable for photoelectrochemical applications will be presented. For both topics, work involving advanced transmission electron microscopic methods will be emphasized.
