Many opportunities for research and internships are available. Stay informed, define your interests, and be ready!
Research on campus
- Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE program)
- Application/eligibility
- Deadline: typically mid-January for following summer
- Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP)
- Traditional UROP for freshmen and sophomores
- Research Scholar Program
- Changing Gears Program
- The MSE faculty also offer undergraduate research projects in their respective research labs for fall/winter semesters, and/or over the summer. These research experiences can be pursued through MSE credits (MATSCI 280 for freshmen and sophomores or MATSCI 490 for juniors and seniors) or paid experience. Several faculty have videos discussing their research, and you can contact MSE faculty members working in your research area of interest!
Research off campus
- Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Competitive, unique summer research experiences at other campuses across the U.S.
- Deadlines: they vary from early December to mid-February.
Internships
- Many companies and national laboratories have online applications for internships and co-ops. Applications are competitive and take place in the fall.
- Make sure your resume and interview strategy are ready.
- Get feedback on your resume and practice interview skills with the Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC).
- Get feedback from your peers: attend the career fair preparation sessions organized by MMS and ASMu every semester.
- Attend on-campus career fairs:
- SWE/TBP Engineering Fall Career Fair: September
- Winter Engineering Career Fair: January
- Check the ECRC calendar and events for company visits.
