Microstructure Frontier in Materials Simulations

Vasily Bulatov, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Control of microstructure through synthesis and processing is key to improving properties and performance of materials in engineering applications. For materials simulations to facilitate materials development, it is necessary to close the still existing wide gap between the length and time scales of fundamental atomistic (unit) mechanisms and the aggregate behavior of material microstructure on scales relevant to practical materials engineering. This presentation will describe how we approach microstructure simulations in our group in Livermore and will discuss several representative applications to simulations of materials under extreme conditions.
