Approaches to Solar Energy Conversion

We would like to generate power from an abundant renewable source in the face of increasing oil prices and the potential effects of the CO2 we are putting into our atmosphere and oceans. In this talk, I will discuss our work that aims to lower the cost of various types of solar cells. To lower the cost of crystalline silicon solar cells, we have developed an approach that lowers the cost three-fold by realizing an array of microconcentrator solar cells using a MEMS process. Our work in organic thin-film solar cells focuses on understanding the physics and developing cell architectures that will result in power conversion efficiencies exceeding 15%. I will also briefly highlight our work in light trapping in thin films and concentrated solar power.
