Low-dimensional systems such as quantum dots and nanowires are of great current interest for applications in thermoelectric energy conversion, because the modified bandstructure in such systems can be used to optimize the electron transmission spectrum. I will discuss the fundamental concepts, and will then report experimental studies of thermoelectric behavior in highly controlled 0D and 1 D structures based on III-V nano wires.
