Amit Misra Named MSE Department Chair

Amit Misra Named MSE Department Chair

Amit Misra

Amit Misra is joining MSE as Professor and Department Chair starting June 1st. He earned his MS (’91) and PhD (’94) degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI under the supervision of Prof. Ron Gibala, and B. Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (now IIT-Varanasi), India. He joined LANL as a post-doc in November 1996, was promoted to a staff scientist in August 1998 and to a Laboratory Fellow in 2011.

At LANL, his most recent appointment was as the Director of a US Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences (DOE/BES) funded Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) titled Center for Materials at Irradiation and Mechanical Extremes ( At LANL, he was also affiliated as a Scientist with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, a DOE/BES sponsored national user facility in New Mexico.

His primary research expertise is in processing-structure-property relations in metallic materials. His research interests and skills include materials processing (physical vapor deposition, solidification processing and severe plastic deformation), nanomechanical behavior of materials, defects and interfaces in materials, and transmission electron microscopy. At U-M, he will be active in research on light-weight structural materials, radiation-damage tolerant materials, high strength and high electrical conductivity materials and other metal-based multiphase and composite materials, with emphasis on designing materials with enhanced functionality through understanding and control of interface and defect phenomena.

He has co-authored over 275 peer-reviewed publications (5 journal covers). He has mentored over 30 early career scientists and engineers (postdocs and graduate students), served on several PhD dissertation committees and received the Distinguished Postdoc Mentor award from LANL.

He is an active volunteer for MSE-centric professional societies, particularly, Materials Research Society (MRS) and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). At MRS, he has served as Meeting Chair for the MRS Fall Meeting 2012, volume organizer (2009) and guest editor (2010) for MRS Bulletin and symposium organizer (5 times). He is currently on the editorial board of MRS Bulletin and Broader Impacts Programming sub-committee of MRS. At TMS, he has served as Chair of the Nano Mechanical Behavior Technical Committee, Programming Grid Chair (2011), Programming committee and symposium organizer (6 times). He is one of the six principal editors of the new Taylor & Francis journal Materials Research Letters, and served as guest editor for special issues in different journals (5 times). He was selected by the National Academy of Engineering for the 2011 US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, and the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAKFI) conference, The Future of Advanced Nuclear Technologies, 2013.

Notable awards/honors include:

Fellow of the American Society of Metals (ASM) International, class of 2011;

Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory, class of 2011;

Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award, TMS - Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division, 2011;

Distinguished Postdoctoral Mentor, LANL 2013.

LANL Fellows’ Prize for outstanding research in nanomechanics, 2008.
