MSE graduate Kevin Golovin receives coveted Distinguished Dissertation Award

Kevin Golovin (PhD '17) is one of only 10 recent U-M graduates selected to receive a ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award for 2017.

MSE is proud to announce that Kevin Golovin (PhD '17) is one of only 10 recent U-M graduates selected to receive a ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award for 2017. This award, which includes an honorarium of $1,000, is given in recognition of the most exceptional scholarly work produced by doctoral students at the University of Michigan who completed their dissertations in 2017.

Golovin's research advisor, Associate Professor Anish Tuteja, commented: "Kevin is an exceptionally gifted scientist and researcher, and one of the best graduate students that I have ever interacted with. He combines an excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals, with extensive research expertise and abilities in a variety of subjects, and is extremely deserving of this honor. Kevin’s thesis pertains to the systematic and precise control of solid and liquid interactions on top of different novel surfaces. He has published his work in some of the best journals in field, and his work has been highlighted in thousands on newspaper articles, TV, radio spots, and websites from around the world, including NPR, NBC, The Wall Street Journal, Chemistry World, The London Telegraph, and Science Magazine, etc. I would like to, in particular, mention his work on icephobic surfaces - surfaces that reduce ice accretion. In my opinion, Kevin’s work in this area has led to perhaps the best icephobic surfaces ever developed. The work has been patented, licensed out and currently being commercialized in different fields of use."

Golovin will receive his award at a ceremony and reception on Tuesday, April 24 in the Assembly Hall on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building.
