Assistant Professor Claudia Loebel recently received a 2023 Elizabeth Caroline Crosby grant, a program which funds a range of scholarly activities proposed by U-M faculty members. Loebel plans to use the award to enhance the visibility of MSE as an undergraduate degree program.

“We plan to visit public high schools in Ann Arbor and throughout Michigan, specifically focusing on schools with large populations of African-American/minority students,” Loebel explained. “The outreach visits will showcase the intriguing work we do during a one-hour workshop featuring hands-on demonstrations. In addition, we will gather information about the needs of these prospective students and offer opportunities to foster one-on-one mentorship with our undergraduate students.”

Loebel says the overall vision of this project is to enhance the recruitment and retention of undergraduate students from underrepresented minority backgrounds within Michigan.

“We maintain the belief that initiating this effort in our local community and state will yield the most immediate impact, while also providing invaluable experience as we aim to engage students on a national and international scale,” Loebel commented.

The first outreach visits are being planned for later this spring.
