MSE is pleased to announce that Assistant Professor Ashwin Shahani has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Outstanding Accomplishment Award, an honor presented annually to an MSE faculty member for his or her stellar performance in materials research, teaching, and service to the department.

Shahani joined MSE in September 2016. He earned his B.S. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, both degrees in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. His research group specializes in the development and application of in situ characterization methods for the study of phase and structural transformations in metals, from solidification to grain growth. His awards include the Air Force Young Investigator Research Program in 2017, the Army Young Investigator Research Program in 2018, and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2019. Shahani has enjoyed serving as advisor of the Michigan Materials Society (MMS) since Fall 2017. Outside of U-M, Shahani has contributed his intellectual leadership as Key Reader of the journal Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A since 2018 and guest editor of MRS Bulletin in 2020.

"I am very humbled to be selected for this prestigious award and also deeply honored to receive it,” Shahani said.

Congratulations, Ashwin!
