MSE is proud to announce that Wenhao Sun has been named the Dow Corning Assistant Professor in the Materials Science & Engineering Department. He will hold the position for a three-year term, until December 31, 2025.

Sun joined the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in January 2020. He performed his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, double majoring in Materials Science and Engineering and Applied Mathematics, and obtained his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.

The Sun Research Group uses high-throughput density functional theory, applied thermodynamics, and materials informatics for a deeper fundamental understanding of synthesis–structure–property relationships, while exploring new chemical spaces for functional technological materials. In 2020 Sun was named a Materials Horizons Emerging Investigator and received the Department of Energy Early Career Award to support his research on ‘Temperature-Time-Transformation (TTT) Diagrams for Predictive Solid-State Ceramic Synthesis.' In 2022, he was awarded the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Award for Machine-Learning in the Chemical Sciences. In addition to research, Sun leads the development of virtual reality teaching modules to visualize the geometry of thermodynamics in his graduate course MATSCIE 532: Advanced Thermodynamics of Materials.

"I am grateful and humbled to be selected by the Dow Chemical Company Foundation for their financial support of my research program," said Sun. "This generous fund will enable our group to pursue high-risk, high-impact research projects related to fundamental synthesis and processing science, which will be critical for ushering in the next age of advanced materials manufacturing."

The Dow Corning Assistant Professorship award alternates every three years between the departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering. The assistant professor selected for the award must be in the first four years of his or her teaching career. Sun succeeds Bryan Goldsmith, a U-M assistant professor of chemical engineering who held the Dow Corning Assistant Professor title until December of 2022.

Congratulations, Wenhao!
