Get lost in the breathtaking views of snow-capped (nx3) and β2(2x4) surface reconstruction mountains surrounding crystal clear lakes of nanopits. The deposition of strained In.81Ga.19As on top of an InGaAs buffer layer lattice matched to InP(001) has been shown to lead to the formation of a mixture of distinct surface reconstructions that may be related to strain relief in the system [1] [2] [3] [4]. This is the first time that the reproducible formation of nanopits is seen on the surface of these films without adjacent islands and may provide another method of strain relaxation on the growing surface. The STM image shows two nanopits embedded in a matrix of (nx3) and β2(2x4) surface reconstructions.
