The following materials and equipment associated with this procedure present exposure or physical health hazards. Safety precautions are prudent and mandatory.

Controls:

Prior to performing this procedure, the following safety equipment must be accessible and ready for use: (e.g. chemical fume hood, biological safety cabinet, laminar flow hood, chemical spill kits)

Protective Equipment:

Prior to performing this procedure, the following personal protective equipment must be obtained and ready for use: (e.g. acid resistant gloves, safety eyewear, lab coat, chemical splash apron)

 

Safety glasses, long pants and closed toed shoes must be worn at all times. High
temperature gloves are required to remove samples.

Waste Disposal:

Mounting Press Overview
  1. Turn the power switch to HEAT (knob 1).
  2. With the top enclosure removed, rotate the RAM DOWN (knob 2) full turn counterclockwise to assure that the bottom ram is in the down position.
  3. Turn the RAM DOWN knob clockwise until the closed position is reached. When the knob stops rotating, stop turning it. If you tighten it too much, you may damage the knob.
  4. Pump the pressure handle until the bottom ram is in the up position with approximately 1/4 inch of the bottom ram showing.
  5. Check cleanliness of both the bottom ram and top enclosure. Brush off if necessary using brass bristle brush to remove any old black phenolic powder.
  6. Position the sample on the bottom ram. If sample needs support to keep it stable, use stainless steel sample holders located in the metallagraphic supply cabinet.
  7. Rotate the RAM DOWN knob counterclockwise one full turn to place the bottom ram in the down position.

  8. Add mounting media (powder or pre-form). If you are using Black Phenolic Resin powder, use approximately 20 grams (one large and small scoop). 

    Sample size
  9. Thread the top enclosure all the way down onto the mold cylinder and then back the top enclosure off one-quarter turn. NOTE: It is VERY IMPORTANT to back the top enclosure off one-quarter turn. This will reduce the stress on the mold cylinder threads and ease the removal of the top enclosure.
  10. Rotate the RAM DOWN knob clockwise to the full close position. 

    Pressure Gauge


  11. Operate the pressure handle to the desired pressure for the mold assembly used. DO NOT ALLOW PRESSURE TO REACH THE OVERLOAD RANGE. We have a 1.25 inch mold assembly, so you will use the middle scale on the pressure gauge. You will want to bring the pressure up to the red dot on the middle scale which represents 4200 psi.
  12. Set the timer (knob 3) to the desired heating time. If you are using Bakelite, the heating time will be approximately 8 minutes.
  13. You will need to keep pumping the pressure up during the heating cycle to maintain a pressure of 4200 psi.
  14. Once the heat cycle time has expired, place the POWER ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.
  15. Place 5 more minutes on the timer to allow the mold to cool. Keep mold pressure stable during this time.
  16. Rotate the RAM DOWN knob counterclockwise one turn to release the pressure inside the mold cylinder.
  17. Unscrew the top enclosure from the mold cylinder. The spring inside the top enclosure will hold the threads apart during the injection process. You will not be able to remove the top enclosure entirely at this time.
  18. Rotate the RAM DOWN knob clockwise to full closure.
  19. Operate the pressure handle until the top enclosure and sample can be seen. Note: MOUNTED SPECIMENS WILL BE VERY HOT. You should wear heat resistant gloves while removing specimens.
  20. Remove the mounted specimen.
  21. After each mount, clean the flashing off of the bottom ram and top enclosure using brass bristle brush to ensure movement of the bottom ram inside the mold cylinder.
