Cheap Science: Corrosion of Pennies

Equipment:

  1. One 100mL beaker
  2. 50 mL of 1M HCl
  3. One penny, 1987 or newer
  4. 1 File
Procedure:

  1. Before class, file the copper coating off the penny in four different spots to expose the zinc inside. Place the penny and acid in the beaker and let it sit for two days. Remove the remaining copper foil from the beaker and rinse with water.
  2. During class, explain the corrosion procedure performed in step (1). Pass around the sample(s) showing the corrosion of the zinc.
